Lindsay Compass Group workers ratify
Bargaining unit members working for Compass Group at Sir Sanford Fleming College in Lindsay have ratified a new contract. The negotiated settlement, ratified June 3, 2010, includes the following improvements:
- Wages increase by 35 cents per hour retroactive to March 1, 2010, with subsequent increases of 35 cents per hour in year two and 30 cents per hour in year three.
- Workers receive an additional sick day in the third year of the contract term.
- Due to the nature of the school year at Sir Sanford Fleming College, members at this location are typically laid off for the months of May, June, July and August, during which they receive Employment Insurance. Upon their return in the fall, they were required – until now – to purchase a $240 parking pass, which is a lot to ask of someone who has been making only 55% of their wages for four months. The union achieved an agreement that the employer will now cover the cost of the parking up front and allow members to reimburse the employer through 15 equal payroll deductions.
- Other improvements include strengthened union representation and recall language.
