Local 175 welcomes its newest members today following a vote held yesterday, October 18, 2011 at the Landmark Inn in Thunder Bay.
The new 75-member bargaining unit includes workers at the hotel with various jobs such as housekeeping, front desk, maintenance, porters and restaurant staff.
“These workers were looking for something more in their day-to-day work life,” explains Rick Wauhkonen, Organizing Coordinator for the Local Union. “They felt their interests and concerns weren’t being addressed by management and they sought out Union representation with us to help better their situation.”
Local 175 also represents more than 230 workers at other Thunder Bay hotels including Travelodge Airlane, Valhalla Inn, Prince Arthur Hotel and Comfort Inn as well as 800 workers in 22 other hotels across the province.
Local 175 Organizer Joe Pereira and Greg Penner, who is a Special Projects Union Representative (SPUR), stand in front of the Landmark Inn following the certification vote held October 18, 2011.
