Two weekend seminars net $18,000 for Leukemia research!
This past weekend, the Kempenfelt Centre in Barrie conference hosted about 120 Stewards from the former Local 1977. This was their last regular conference as 1977 Stewards as next year they will be part of the regular Locals 175 & 633 regional seminars.
Many of the Stewards have been attending this conference for years – some as many as 20. This year’s schedule included a panel discussions on organizing – led by National Representative Marv Funk, Local 175 Organizers Ron McGuire and Rick Wauhkonen and two H&M workers who were instrumental in organizing their store at Square One in Mississauga – the first H&M store to unionize in Canada.
Stewards also participated in a political action discussion and got the chance to hear from both Scott Penner, former president of Local 1977, and Local 175 President Shawn, about the merger of the two Local Unions and what it means going forward.
The generosity of everyone was greatly appreciated. The weekend raised more than $10,000 through the purchase of draw prize tickets, a silent auction as well as poker, billiards and euchre tournaments.
In Niagara Falls, the annual Stewards seminar saw more than 200 Stewards take part in classes and fundraising as well. Classes offered this year included the standard Stewards training, Health & Safety classes as well as courses on Work Reintegration, arbitration, political action and others.
There were a lot of prizes up for grabs in the Leukemia fundraisers this year. Stewards bid on silent auction items and purchased draw tickets all to raise money for Leukemia research. The weekend raised a total of $8,860 bringing the combined total for the conferences to $18,860!
President Shawn Haggerty addressed Stewards at both conferences. Also at both conferences was Ryan Dyck from Egale Canada, who has made presentations at most of the Steward Seminars this year. Egale Canada is a national Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) human rights organization. Ryan spoke to the Stewards about bullying and ensuring that they provide a safe space for all members to discuss the issues they face at work.
Thanks to everyone who attended the seminars this weekend! They bring an end to this year’s stewards training but we hope to see you all, and some new faces, next fall!
