Local 175 members on strike at Sobeys Milton Retail Support Centre

At 12:01 a.m. on Monday, February 11, 2013, the 428 members of Local 175 working at Sobeys Retail Support Centre in Milton began legal strike action against the company. Workers rejected a final offer from the company at a meeting held February 10, 2013, following 13 days of negotiation.

Workers rejected Sobeys’ final offer because the company wanted a nine-year contract term, which would limit the ability of the Union and workers to go back to the table to resolve any matters for that duration. Other issues at stake include the company’s attempt to erode contract language including the excessive use of part-time workers, which in turn results in fewer full-time jobs.

“The members on strike at Sobeys have the full support of their Union and its resources,” says UFCW Local 175 President, Shawn Haggerty. The striking workers are on the picket line and will continue to be there until the company agrees to return to the bargaining table and take a reasonable approach to the workers’ concerns.
