2013 UFCW Ride for a Cure raises more than $11,000
The 2013 UFCW Ride for a Cure, hosted by Local 175 and Local 1000A, raised more than $11,000 this year thanks once again to the generosity of our participants and sponsors. Despite the rainy day, 37 riders came out to enjoy the winding roads in some of Ontario’s most scenic areas. [photos]
Norah Rae, a Local 175 member at Rexall in Guelph, won the award for most pledges raised. “Norah brought in $925 in pledges,” said John DiNardo, Local 175 Union Rep and one of the event’s organizers. “We’re so grateful for her dedication to the cause.”
Norah has worked for Rexall for 17 years and has been a Steward for the last four years. She’s been riding bikes since she was 17 and has family members close to her suffering from cancer so it’s a cause close to her heart. In fact, Norah has donated whole blood 150 times! Brian Scott Rolson, who raised $600, won the second award for most pledges and Rob Nicholas raised $550 and took home the third award.
Other prizes awarded included Show n’ Shine, which went to Jynn Messina whose bike the other riders voted as best. The Worst Poker Hand went to Gord Houser and the Best Poker Hand award went to Gord Knowles. Pred Gajic won a camera and chaps in the draw held for returning riders. A number of draw prizes were up for grabs including motorcycle paraphernalia, sports tickets and more.
We hope to have this event grow next year to include riders from across Ontario. The more motorcycle enthusiasts we can get out on the roads for this event, the more money we can raise to help find a cure for blood cancers. If you, or someone you know, own a motorbike, belong to a motorbike club, or would just like to come out and volunteer for the day, please contact John Dinardo at 905-821-8329 / 1-800-565-8329.
