Thousands rally at Stand up for Steel Day of Action
Thousands of Union members and activists, including staff and members from UFCW Local 175, took to the streets of Hamilton on Saturday, January 30, 2016, to support members of the United Steel Workers (USW) in a Day of Action.
USW organized the Stand up for Steel rally to stop Canada’s courts from allowing U.S. Steel from taking away more critical health-care benefits from 20,000 pensioners and moving jobs out of the country. Many pensioners have already had their benefits cuts drastically and their pensions are at risk too.
“We are proud to stand in solidarity with the Steelworkers and demand that our government and our courts look out for Canada’s working families first and foremost,” said President Haggerty. “We have to ensure that the pensions people have worked decades for don’t just disappear. Pensions must be protected even if a company files for bankruptcy.”
Protestors rallied at City Hall before marching toward the Convention Centre where they held another rally. Speakers included federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair and provincial NDP leader Andrea Horwath, plus Local 175 Union Rep Tim Deelstra, as well as other MPPs and Labour representatives.
