Lakeside Retirement members secure new contract
All pay grids for the unionized employees at Lakeside Retirement go up by 2% in each year of the agreement. The cook classification receives a wage adjustment in addition to the regular increases. And, the contract contains two new classifications as well:
- Certified Unregulated Care Provider (UCP), and;
- Breakfast Cook.
Personal Support Workers (PSWs) who choose to take the UCP training, at the employer’s cost, and assigned as outlined in the agreement, will receive a premium of 30 cents per hour. Similarly, a Dietary Aide required by the employer to fill in for the breakfast cook receive a premium of 30 cents per hour.
Shift premiums for those required to rotate through all three shifts improve to 20 cents per hour, up from 15 cents. Plus, a new night shift premium provides 10 cents per hour for hours so worked. Part-time employees working full-time hours for 13 weeks will be reclassified as full-time.
Language improvements ensure the Christmas schedule will be posted by December 1 each year.
Members benefit from a reduced number of qualifying hours needed to reach the four and five-week vacation entitlements. An additional float day will be effective starting in 2019.
Effective in 2020, members benefit from improved paid bereavement leave. Employees will receive five days for the death of a spouse, child or step-child.
The employer will contribute $250 per year, up from $150, to the UFCW Local 175 Training & Education Fund.
The 43 members in the bargaining unit at Lakeside are part of the Health, Office & Professional Employees (HOPE) sector of Local 175. Members ratified the three-year agreement on September 11, 2018.

The Union welcomed more Health Care workers not too long ago from Bayfield Manor! Read more about what brought those workers to our Union here. Earlier this year, PSWs at the Victorian Order of Nurses of Canada in Elgin County voted to join UFCW 175 as well!
