Membership Dues

The only way a union can operate is by collecting dues from the membership. All of our members at A&P, Loblaws, Loeb, Zehrs and other retail grocery, hospitality, retirement and nursing homes, industrial plants and warehouses pay union dues every week.

The dues collected by the union are used to provide services to our members.

Your union works on your behalf to:

  • Fight or settle grievances and arbitrations.

  • Ensure injured members receive proper compensation from the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board.

  • Provide Health and Safety Service, etc.

  • Have Union Representatives negotiate and service contracts with employers.
All union members pay dues in order to allow their union to function properly. This means union members like teachers, nurses, firemen, postal workers, bus drivers, auto workers and food workers pay union dues.

In fact, close to 40 per cent of the Canadian workforce is unionized. All of these unionized workers pay union dues.

No one would ever join a union if he or she paid more than they benefited from their collective agreements. Employees should also be aware that UNION DUES ARE FULLY TAX-DEDUCTIBLE.

It's also important to understand that members won't pay dues unless the collective agreement negotiated between the union and the employer is acceptable to more than 50 per cent of the bargaining unit.

This means that no one pay dues until improvements have been made to wages, benefits, working conditions, hours of work and job security.
