Locals 175 & 633 In The News

President Hanley announces he is stepping down from his role as president of Local 175: will concentrate on role as UFCW Canada National President

President Wayne Hanley was elected as UFCW Canada National President in April 2006. Since that time, President Hanley has been dividing his time between the Local Union and the UFCW National. With the recent changes at the UFCW National Council, President Hanley has decided that now is the right time to allocate all of his time to the national office and step down as president of Local 175, effective December 31, 2007.

“It has been an honour and privilege to be the President of Local 175. Our gains and accomplishments over my years as President are a tribute to the hard work and dedication of many people including our workplace stewards, our staff and all of our members across the province,” says President Hanley.

In a November meeting with the Local 175 Executive Board, President Hanley recommended Secretary-Treasurer Shawn Haggerty as his successor: and the Executive Board elected Shawn to the position of Local 175 President.

Previously, Shawn worked for Robin Hood Multifoods (now Horizon Milling) for a number of years and was elected president of that Local Union. He was hired as a Union Representative with Local 617P where he later became Secretary-Treasurer until that local merged with Local 175 in 2000. During his seven years on staff with Local 175, Shawn has been a Union Rep for the Central West region, Director of the North West Region, Executive Assistant to President Hanley and currently serves as the Local 175 Secretary-Treasurer.

President Hanley also recommended that current Executive Assistant Teresa Magee be elected as the new Secretary-Treasurer of the Local. Teresa was also elected to that position by the Executive Board members. Previously Teresa worked for CIBC, where she was the elected union chairperson for 350 workers. During that time, she gained experience in advocating for workers and was a volunteer instructor and organizer with the Canadian Labour Congress. Teresa joined the staff of Local 175 in 1990 as a union rep in the Central Region and then as Director of the South West region from 2001 until she was appointed as Executive Assistant to President Hanley in January 2005.

“These changes will bring new opportunities for our members and our Local Union,” says President Hanley. “I am confident that the new leadership will achieve many positive changes and results in the coming years.”
