Ride for a Cure raises $13,000 for Leukemia research

The 4th annual UFCW "Ride for a Cure" – was a thundering success! This year’s participants help raised $13,115 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) bringing our four-year total to $35,828.

2008 UFCW Ride for a Cure

“What a tremendous group of people we had here today,” commented Shawn Haggerty, President of UFCW Local 175. “For these people to brave the rain instead of staying dry at home, really shows we have a great event and participants that are committed to this important cause.”

The day’s ride, held on August 9th, took in many local attractions such as Terra Cotta, Cheltenham Badlands, the Loretto Inn and Hockley Valley. The 47 riders and volunteers arrived from all over including Beaverton, Sudbury, Burlington and Guelph. And John Watson joined us this year again from St Louis, Missouri.

Breakfast muffins and banana bread made by our volunteers tantalized taste buds early in the morning. Riders stopped for lunch at the Loretto Inn where one lucky rider, Barry Mailloux, won the 32” Toshiba TV lunch time raffle.

Barry, a returning rider this year, and his family have been affected by cancer. He likes the event so much that this year he returned to help organize the event marshals. “This is such a great event,” he explains. “I’m impressed by the camaraderie and generosity of all the people here. Even with the rain it was a great day.” At the end of the day, Barry donated the 32” TV he won earlier back to the organizers to raffle off at their next event.

It is for families such as Barry’s and everyone who is affected by cancer that members and staff of Locals 175 & 633 work so hard throughout the year to raise money for the LLSC. “Last year our Local raised $375,000, which helped bring the national total to an astounding $1,400,000,” said President Haggerty.

2008 UFCW Ride for a Cure

The event ended with a barbecue featuring delicious Angus burgers, chicken breast and salads donated by Cargill, Maple Lodge Farms, A&P and Back Burner catering.

Other winners included: Rob Nicholas, who won a motorcycle jacket donated by Freak~n~Leather, for collecting the most pledges ($405) and Lorilei White, who won a gift certificate to Freak~n~Leather for the second most pledges collected ($390). The prize for most pledges collected by a club or organization went to Richard McNaughton, President of UFCW Local 333, who returned to the ride for his fourth year. Richard presented organizers with a total donation of $1,075.

Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty helps give out prizes at the 2008 Ride for a Cure
President Shawn Haggerty hands out prizes at the conclusion
of the 2008 Ride for a Cure. Participants withstood quite a
downpour during the ride and raised more than $13,000.

The Ride for a Cure committee gives special thanks to Fred, Karl and Barry who provided traffic control and to Peel Region EMS for providing a vehicle to follow the riders throughout the day. National Car Rental donated the use of a Mustang convertible for our staff to use for photographing and video taping the ride. Thanks also to the guys from the Neighbourhood Mechanic radio show for taking an interest and dropping by for a look.

For their generous support each rider received an official ride t-shirt, raffle tickets, meals and the opportunity to win at poker. In addition, George Marnica of Tech Sox International presented each rider with a pair of specially engineered motorcycle socks.

Plans are underway for next year’s event, which promises to be bigger and better. So motorcycle enthusiasts, mark your calendar for Saturday August 8th, 2009 as it promises to be another exciting ride.

Riders from this year’s event have an extra incentive to return next year. We will hold a special draw again for return riders who will receive a special raffle ticket for each additional new rider that they bring to the event as well.
