Central West & South Central members raise more money than last year for Leukemia research

On November 15, more than 200 Stewards from the Central West and South Central regions attended the 2008 Stewards Seminar in Niagara Falls. President Shawn Haggerty addressed the delegates and spoke about the need for growth in the labour movement as an essential part of how unions can remain strong in tough economic times.

Stewards took part in a variety of courses including everything from Stewards Level 1 to in-depth courses on Health & Safety, WSIB and a new course this year, Bullying in the Workplace.

Central West Director Paul Jokhu was very happy with the weekend's fundraising results. "We raised a grand total of $33,689 for Leukemia research just over the two day seminar," he said. That beats last year's total of $32,030. Union Rep Joe DeMelo pledged to shave his head - which he had done just a couple of months ago to raise money at a Maple Leaf Burlington fundraiser - if they beat last year's total and kept to his promise just several days later.

Check out some photos from the seminar and Joe's head shave!
