New contract ratified for more than 800 Cargill workers

On Monday, May 11, 2009, members working at Cargill (formerly Sun Valley Foods) in London, voted overwhelmingly in favour of a new four-year collective agreement. The more than 800 workers covered by the contract will benefit from increased pension contributions and a number of other improvements as follows:

  • The company will contribute 35 cents per hour toward the Canadian Commercial Workers Industry Pension Plan (CCWIPP) Stabilization Fund in each year of the contract term, effective June 2, 2009.
  • Full-time workers receive a signing bonus of $500 and wage increases of 35 cents per hour in the second year, 35 cents per hour in the third year and 45 cents per hour in the final year of the contract.
  • Workers classified as Group 7 or 8 receive an additional adjustment of 50 cents per hour in year two and 25 cents per hour in year three.
  • Flex time workers receive a signing bonus of $250 with new pay rates effective June 2, 2010.
  • A new premium provides 75 cents per hour for workers assigned to certify trainees.
  • In the event of plant closure, the company will provide enhanced severance of 1.5 weeks pay for each year of service to a maximum of 26 years.
  • Workers also benefit from improvements to life insurance, dental coverage, eye exams and bereavement leave.

Super 8 workers achieve new contract

At a meeting held May 13, 2009, members working at the Super 8 Motel in Sudbury ratified a new collective agreement. The 11-member bargaining unit achieved the following improvements:

  • Wages increase over the course of the contract by up to 88 cents per hour.
  • Bereavement language improves to include common-law spouses.
  • The employer agrees to try and schedule full-time employees off one weekend per month.
  • Family Day was successfully negotiated into the contract as a paid holiday.

Weston Bakery workers renew contract with improvements

Seventy workers at Weston Bakery in Cobourg ratified their new 3 year collective agreement on May 3, 2009. Members will benefit from the following improvements:

  • Wages increase 95 cents per hour for all employees, with an additional 25 cents per hour for Lead Hands.
  • Vision care coverage increases by $25.
  • New language supports bargaining unit work to be performed by members, and limits supervisors.
  • Workers are now paid overtime wages after an eight hour day, and can also bank any overtime hours incurred.
  • The vacation selection process will now be done by seniority.

UFCW Canada Boycotts Old Dutch Snack Foods Ltd.

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) has endorsed a nation-wide boycott of products made by Old Dutch Snack Foods Ltd.

The company locked out 170 members of UFCW Canada Local 401 in Calgary, Alberta on March 29, 2009.

The collective agreement for these workers expired more than one year ago. This boycott will last until the company agrees to negotiate a fair and equitable agreement.

In addition to all "Old Dutch" label items, the boycott includes the following brands:

  • Great Value (Wal-Mart)
  • Compliments Value (Sobeys)
  • Safeway Blue Bags (Safeway)
  • Co-op Krunchie (Co-op)
  • Cyclone (Overwaite)
  • President's Choice (Western Grocers)
  • No Name (Western Grocers)
