Bargaining unit at Encore Communications achieves new contract

On June 9, 2009, the Local 175 members working at Encore Communications in Kitchener ratified a three-year renewal to their collective agreement.

The contract includes wage increase of 2 per cent in year one, 2 per cent in year two and 3 per cent in the last year of the deal. In addition, new classifications for Lead Hand and Part-time Sales/Promotion have been added.

Workers now receive Family Day as a paid holiday. The employer will contribute to the UFCW Health & Welfare Fund in the amount of $170 per month effective July 1, 2009, $175 per month in 2010 and $180 per month in 2011.

First contract for community health workers in Rexdale

The 26 new members working at the Rexdale Community Health Centre (CHC) gained their first collective agreement at a ratification meeting on June 9, 2009. The new Collective Agreement provides many improvements, which include the following:

  • Improved wages and a lump sum payment of $300 for full-time and $200 for part-time into the employer sponsored RRSP.
  • Language provides for an effective Grievance Procedure, representation at all meetings where discipline may occur, full seniority rights, job postings, layoff and recall provisions as well as protected hours of work, and protected and improved rest periods.
  • Important return to work language that protects jobs after an accident or injury.
  • Much improved Leave of Absence language including protected personal leave, improved Bereavement Leave, Union leave, Paid Education leave, Jury/Crown witness leave, Pregnancy & Parental leave that includes a SUB “top up”, Pre-Paid leave that allows for a worker to “bank” a portion of their wages for four years and take the fifth year off with 80 per cent pay.
  • Protected Benefits that are Employer paid and an Employer-contribution matched RRSP program.
  • Improved vacation entitlement and pay and improved Statutory Holidays including three floater days.
  • Professional Development funding with a limit of $600 for full-time and $400 for part-time per year.
  • Improved Overtime and Comp/Lieu time for hours worked.
  • Improved Sick Leave with a maximum of thirty (30) paid sick days of which up to fifteen (15) of these days may be used to care for a sick immediate family member.

Deal ratified by Canadian Linen workers

The almost 70 members working at Canadian Linen in both Kingston and Ottawa ratified a new collective agreement at meetings held on June 17, 2009. The contract includes the following improvements:

  • Wages increase by 1.25 per cent in the first year, 2 per cent in the second year and 2.5 per cent in the third year of the deal.
  • In addition, full-time receive a lump sum of $500, and part-time receive $150, as of the date of ratification.
  • Five full-time jobs will be added upon ratification.
  • Company contributions to the workers’ health and welfare plan and pension plan increase.
  • Family Day is now a paid holiday and as a ratification bonus, each employee will receive one day’s additional pay on their birthday each year.
  • Improved language addresses Stewards and representation, negotiating committee and seniority that recognizes part-time employees.
  • The workers’ boot allowance increases as well.

Locals 175 & 633 members contribute $375,000 to the national fundraising total

The 20th Annual UFCW Canada Gala in Support of Leukemia Research took place on June 12, 2009 in downtown Toronto.

Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty presents the Local Union's fundraising total at the 20th Annual Gala.

“I’m happy to be able to present such a great total raised by the generous members of Locals 175 & 633,” said Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty who announced the Local Union’s contribution to the National total was $375,000.

Once again, this year’s top fundraiser was the UFCW Local 12R24/The Beer Store bottle drive, held the weekend after the Victoria Day long weekend. The annual event, which involved more than 2,000 volunteers, raised an astounding $830,007.68.

Guests enjoyed a great dinner while being entertained by a number of musical acts. Following presentations made by a number of Local Unions, National President Wayne Hanley announced another record breaking total for the nation-wide efforts of $1,659,539.62.

Scrapbooking Crop Day raises more than $1,200 for Leukemia research

On May 30, 2009, thirty people including staff, members and their families, attended the 2nd Annual Crop Day to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Participants received a scrapbook layout and enjoyed a barbecue lunch with an ice cream sundae to follow in the afternoon. Everyone got to take home grab bag of goodies as well as everything they created during the day. Make n’ Takes were available to everyone to learn how to make their own album for their treasured pictures. Prizes were awarded for Best Layout, Best Card and Best Guess.

  

In addition to the entrance fee, members bought draw tickets to win a number of great prizes, raising a total of $1233.05.

Grand Prize Winners were Trinity Magee (CriCut Machine), Ursola DeCamillis (Microwave), Angela Turner (landscape painting) and Vicky Klenot (scrapbook tote and supplies).

Many participants also brought new stuffed animals to the event to be donated to Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital and McMaster Hospital. In addition, some workplaces helped out by donating prizes, food and beverages.

Belfast fruit workers have new agreement

The 18 members of Local 175 working at Belfast Fruit in Ottawa have a new three-year contract, which was approved by the bargaining unit on June 14, 2009.

  • Full-time wages increase by 40 cents per hour in each year of the contract term and the part-time end rate improves by 25 cents per hour in each year.
  • All part-time workers in the wage scale receive an increase of 75 cents per hour as of March 31, 2011.
  • Full-time workers receive a $60 gift certificate as of ratification.
  • Full-time workers may now bank up to six sick days.
  • The cost of medical documentation requested by the company will be reimbursed by the company.
  • The safety shoe allowance increases by $25.
  • Both full and part-time receive Family Day as a paid holiday and improved language will recognize any new legal holiday declared by the government.
  • Those workers entitled to three or more week’s vacation may take up to one week’s worth as individual days.
  • Bereavement entitlement improves to four days, up from two, for the death of a spouse of child.
  • A worker whose wife has a baby, or one who adopts a child, will receives two paid days off.
  • Improved language ensures schedules will be posted by Thursday and will include Sunday to Sunday scheduling.
  • The company agrees to donate $300 to the UFCW Leukemia Research Fund and they will provide a payroll deduction option to workers to go toward the same.

New contract for day care workers

At a ratification meeting on June 5, 2009, members working at The Church of St. Peter’s Day Care Centre obtained their new 3-year collective agreement. Workers will benefit from the following improvements: 

  • Over the term of the agreement, wages increase to $1.25 for ECE workers, 95 cents for non-ECE and cooks, and 65 cents for supply workers.
  • Bereavement language now includes step-child, or any other child residing in the same household.
  • Family Day is now a paid holiday.
  • Eye care increases to $200, up from $150 while the employer will pay the cost of eye exams up to $75 every 24 months.
  • In addition to the pension plan, the employer will contribute 35 cents retroactive to May 29, 2009 and then 55 cents as of December 1, 2009 to the stabilization fund.

2009 hockey tournament raises more than $25,000

On April 17 and 18, 2009, the Local Union held its annual hockey tournament to raise money for Leukemia research.

“Every one of these players is doing their part to raise money,” said event organizers Executive Assistant Harry Sutton and Union Rep Matt Davenport. “And they’re getting a lot of exercise while doing it.”

This year, 16 teams participated in the two-day event that ended with a great game between the teams from Maple Leaf Pork and Watson Foods. First place went to the team from Maple Leaf Pork. Raffle draws and entrance fees combined to raise more than $25,000 over just the two days.

“This event is always a great time,” says President Shawn Haggerty. “We always have a great turnout and raise a lot of money. I always look forward to watching a few games and meeting the players that put two days of their time toward this great cause.”

Thunder Bay golf club workers vote on new deal

Members working at Fort William Golf Course and Country Club in Thunder Bay ratified their new 3 year collective agreement on May 29, 2009. Improvements include:

  • Recognition of service clause giving a 25 cent increase for every year over 5 years of service.
  • Wage increases of 25 cents per year for all pay scales. The overall wage increases are significant because of the raise in minimum wage.
  • Workers with 8 years of service receive an 8 percent increase in vacation pay.
  • Family Day and the Civic holiday are now considered statutory.
  • Full-time employees now receive family benefits, up from single worker coverage.
  •  The company will provide UV protection safety glasses.

Sofina Foods workers ratify new contract improvements

At a ratification meeting held May 31, 2009, the 110 members working at Sofina Foods, formerly Cuddy Food Products, in London approved a new three-year collective agreement.

  • Workers receive a lump sum payment, paid in two installments, of $500 in the first year, 25 cents per hour in the second year and 30 cents per hour in the final year of the contract term.
  • Company contributions to the workers’ pension plan increase to 85 cents per hour as of June 2, 2009 and to 93 cents per hour on June 1, 2011.
  • An additional Steward will be permitted bringing the total for the facility to eight plus one Chief Steward with at least one Steward on each shift.
  • The company will pay up to $50 per year toward the cost of eye examinations.
  • Bereavement entitlement improves to four days leave, up from three, for the death of an immediate family member.
  • There is improved language concerning anti-discrimination.

UFCW Canada Boycotts Old Dutch Snack Foods Ltd.

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) has endorsed a nation-wide boycott of products made by Old Dutch Snack Foods Ltd.

The company locked out 170 members of UFCW Canada Local 401 in Calgary, Alberta on March 29, 2009.

The collective agreement for these workers expired more than one year ago. This boycott will last until the company agrees to negotiate a fair and equitable agreement.

In addition to all "Old Dutch" label items, the boycott includes the following brands:

  • Great Value (Wal-Mart)
  • Compliments Value (Sobeys)
  • Safeway Blue Bags (Safeway)
  • Co-op Krunchie (Co-op)
  • Cyclone (Overwaite)
  • President's Choice (Western Grocers)
  • No Name (Western Grocers)
