Local 175 welcomes new members and celebrates a first contract

On November 30, 2009, the 40 new members of Local 175 working at B and B Roadhouse in Dryden achieved their first collective agreement. The 28-month contract establishes provisions for seniority, steward representation, grievance and arbitration procedure, layoff and recall and other important language that protects the members’ jobs. This contract enhances current working conditions and provides an excellent starting point for the next contract negotiations.

  • All employees receive a lump sum payment of $100.
  • Wages increase by between 45 cents per hour and 97 cents per hour, depending on classification, over the term of the contract.
  • Full-time workers receive five paid sick days per year whereas before they did not receive any paid sick leave.
  • Overtime guidelines, which did not exist before.

Union Negotiators: Union Rep Dean McLaren and North West Regional Director Dan Lacroix.

UFCW Canada national resolution on CCWIPP

At the recent meeting of the UFCW Canada National Council executive a resolution was unanimously passed to secure the pensions of members receiving benefits from the Canadian Commercial Workers Industry Pension Plan (CCWIPP). In order to assist the pension fund in recovery from the type of shortfall experienced by investments globally in the recent economic downturn, employers need to secure CCWIPP pensions by renewing their commitments to the plan.

Resolution:

That UFCW Canada Local Unions and the National Council unite in solidarity and support to resist and fight any attempt by employers to withdraw from CCWIPP. Further; Local Unions will take necessary actions – up to and including strikes – to preserve and improve CCWIPP to ensure the best possible retirement income for its participants, our members.

Bill 168 passes second reading

On October 20, 2009, the workplace violence bill passed second reading in the Ontario legislature.  Bill 168 would amend the Occupational Health & Safety Act to recognize workplace violence and harassment as hazards that must be prevented.

The Legislature’s Standing Committee on Social Policy will now address the Bill with further debate.

“We are happy to see the Bill pass its first and second reading,” says Shawn Haggerty, president of Local 175. “Our Local Union fully supports this Bill but we hope to see improvements made to it as well.”

Activists may get a chance to make further proposals for amendments to the bill if the Committee opens their discussion to public hearings. The labour movement and families of workplace violence victims still want to see a number of improvements made.

  • Include the threat of violence and harassment in the definition of workplace violence
  • Legal role and training for Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) members.
  • Specific regulation detailing prevention measures and guidelines regarding the application of law.

Learn more about Bill 168 – visit the Ontario Legislative Assembly’s Web site.
