Today, around the world in many countries, same sex relationships are illegal.
In fact, in 10 countries the death penalty is possible for same sex acts. And, even in progressive countries, LGBTQ people experience discrimination and violence. Thirty-seven out of the 130 countries that celebrate May 17 still consider same-sex acts illegal.
Created in 2004, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia encourages awareness and promotes tolerance, respect and freedom regardless of people’s sexual orientations or gender identities.
