Update on Loblaw negotiations
April 15, 2010 at 7:25pm
The second round of negotiations for members working at Loblaws, Zehrs, Great Food Store, Real Canadian Superstore and Fortinos came to a close on April 15, 2010. Fifty-six representatives from UFCW Locals 175 & 633, 1000A and 1977 make up the negotiating committee. The four Locals have upheld a solidarity pact, which was introduced at the commencement of negotiations in 2005, which lead to a successful outcome. The second session of negotiations resumed on April 12, 2010. Discussions began on common proposals, which apply to all five company banners. Separate breakout sessions took place with the company and each Local Union to discuss Local-specific proposals.
After the second round, all four Local Unions foresee this set of bargaining to be the most difficult they’ve ever experienced with the company. At this time, the Local Unions are concerned with the tone of the company’s proposals. The company’s position is tough, but this isn’t uncommon in the early stages of negotiations.
The Local Unions cannot predict the outcome at this time, but will continue negotiating so long as bargaining is productive. All four Local Unions appreciate the strong support of our members behind the negotiating committee and we look forward to updating you on a regular basis during the next round of bargaining.
Currently, the scheduled dates of the third round are May 3 – 6, 2010.
