This Day of Action raises awareness of how difficult this time of year can be for injured workers and their families who must struggle through the broken WSIB system. ONIWG is the Ontario Network of Injured Workers’ Groups.
This year’s focus is What Doug Ford Can Do Today to keep Ontario’s workers safe and make sure all injured workers are looked after properly by the system that is supposed to protect them.
First: The Ontario Government has already passed an amendment to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act that would hold employers responsible when temp agency workers are injured or killed on the job. Doug Ford simply needs to sign it in order to make every temp labourer in Ontario safer – but he hasn’t.
And second: Back in May, Bill 119 the “Respecting Injured Workers Act” was introduced by Niagara MPP Wayne Gates. This Bill would end the WSIB’s poverty-creating practice of “deeming” (or pretending an injured worker has a job that they don’t in fact have and cutting their benefits). The bill could end injured worker poverty. More than 35 MPPs have already pledged to support it. The government simply has to call a vote in order to make it law – but they haven’t.
Enough is enough. Doug Ford – pass these laws, and #FIXITNOW.
